COMMUNITY SERVICE
Service is one of Alpha Kappa Psi’s five core values. At JMU’s Nu Psi chapter we are dedicated to embodying this value by being involved in the Harrisonburg community and having fun while doing so. We participate in many different community service organizations in order to give back to the community including Adopt-A-Highway, The ARC, Blood Drives , Big Brother/Big Sister and many more.
Adopt A Highway
In 1991, the Nu Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi at James Madison University adopted a section of Port Republic Road through the Adopt-A-Highway program. Since then multiple times a semester many members of our chapter venture out to our section of highway to clean up trash along the side of the road in order to keep our community clean and beautiful. The ARC
The ARC Mission statement is as follows: “The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.” Our chapter volunteers at ARC events such as holiday dances and game nights to help those with developmental disabilities socialize and be included in the Harrisonburg/JMU community. These events are not only rewarding for The ARC members but for our brother volunteers as well. To find out more check out The ARCs website.
Relay For Life
Every spring our chapter creates a team to raise money for The American Cancer Society. Each member raises money and then we participate in an overnight walking event! It is a great service event that we love to participate in. Last year we raised over $1,000!
Big Brother/Big Sister
Many of our brothers are involved in the Big Brother Big Sister organization. By mentoring a child of the Harrisonburg community our brothers have the opportunity to positively shape a child’s future. To find out more about this rewarding program check out the Big Brother Big Sister website.
